Do you own a pond that needs improving?
Do you have property where a naturally balanced pond would be a wonderful resource?

Do you live in a suburban neighborhood where there is a retention pond that could be improved?
Or do you teach others about the complexity of pond ecology, and could use additional training in pond ecosystems related to permaculture?

If you answered yes to any of these questions,
then this class is for you!

Topics Include:

  • Basic Permaculture related to ponds
  • Inventory of the pond’s ecology
  • Principles of pond health
  • Using the pond to supply food
  • Balancing the multiple uses of the pond
  • Aquatic plant and wildlife identification
  • Identification and removal of invasive plants and weeds
  • Introducing native plants
  • Wetland restoration near the pond
  • Using Permaculture to grow food close to the pond

BILL WILSON

Bill is a teacher, communitarian and permaculturists, holding three Permaculture Design Certifications.
He and his wife/partner, Rebecca, are co-founders of
Midwest Permaculture providing on-going permaculture education.  New this year is a 4-day Suburban/Urban Permaculture Training Intensive, the first of which is being hosted at Purdue University.

As a 31-year resident of the sustainability oriented community of Stelle, IL, Bill and Becky were involved in the plantings surrounding what was once, a very plain and open Stelle pond (see photos below).

The two of them are also creating a permaculture oasis surrounding their traditional suburban home
which will be available for free touring following
the field day, from 3:30 – 4:30.

BILL LAND

Bill is the Director of Land Education for the Center for Sustainable Community. His interest in aquatic habitats is in part personal since he has lived for over a decade adjacent to lakes in Indiana. As a Professor of Geography he has taught Environmental Conservation many times at the University level. Each class Bill taught included permaculture instruction related to habitat, aquatic and land enhancement.

Driving Directions to Stelle
Stelle is located in the country about 90 south of downtown Chicago or 60 miles north of Champaign/Urbana. Be sure to follow the driving directions and maps on this page. Because we are so rural, some of the internet map services send folks way out-of-the-way.

Lodging Near Stelle (For those traveling any distance or desiring a longer stay.)
There are local area motels (in order of closeness) in Ashkum, Dwight, Pontiac and Kankakee (20-30 miles distance). We can also highly recommend the Greenhouse Bed & Breakfast for a close, friendly and comfortable place to stay (about $55/night) just two miles down the road.
