Wayne's Trip to Kano, Nigeria

Africa... February 2007

Wayne was invited by OIC International to meet with farmers in the rural areas of Kano, Nigeria.  Wayne had written an article for Rodale’s, New Farm Magazine a while back and someone from OICI wondered what a permaculture perspective might do to support rural African farmers.

He was asked to give a general assessment of what the benefits might be of a permaculture design in the rural villages, as well as explore what sort of value added products the  local farmers could produce that would provide additional income.

Wayne was humbled by what he saw and learned while there. The trainings and information he offered were well received and should make a difference over time. He also contracted malaria which significantly changed the expectations he had for his journey over seas.

What follows are some fascinating pictures of Kano, the surrounding area and its people that I found on the internet.  The city of Kano has about 4 million residents.  Kano is also the name of the larger district (state).                           (Bill Wilson)
