Best Permaculture Books
Four Titles to Help You Simplify the Selection Process
There are over 100 books on the subject of permaculture, but to help simplify the selection process for the beginning student, these are the four primary books that we can recommend with confidence.
Top Two IntroductoryTitles
For a great opening to permaculture, these two titles continue to be our favorites—the “Introduction to Permaculture" because it was written by Bill Mollison himself and gives a great overview on the subject -- and “Gaia’s Garden” because of the clarity, simplicity and appropriateness of the examples that Toby Hemenway gives that relate to the Midwest-temperate-climate zone.
Gaia's Garden (New Edition)
By Toby Hemenway $30.00 (free shipping)
Introduction to Permaculture
By Bill Mollison
$38.00 (free shipping)
Both of these titles are a bit more difficult to locate and cost more but are the ultimate reference books for the serious permaculturist.
Bill Mollison’s “A Designers Manual” is still considered the bible of permaculture. Our certifying instructor, Wayne Weiseman, has practically worn out his copy of this 'brilliant' text, as he calls it.
More recently, another pair of books have been released that we believe are the definitive for laying out permaculture plant guilds in the temperate climate zone. One of our permaculture friends just about cried when he found "Edible Forest Gardens"by Dave Jacke, wondering where they were when he started his permaculture farm years earlier. He said they would have saved him in time and mistakes. This double volume set is also loaded with permaculture design fundamentals. We (Bill and Becky) now know Dave personally and of the years of research it took to pull these two volumes together. They are a gift to us all.
